Franklin Lakes Special Needs Housing Project Approved

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J.-- A 40-unit special needs housing project is slated to begin construction in the spring.

After years of delays, a special needs housing unit has the approval to begin construction of housing for people with specific disabilities. The building will be built on McCoy Road in Franklin Lakes, and should take 12 months to complete.

Borough officials acquired the property, which consists of nearly 14 acres at the corner of McCoy Road and Colonial Road, in August 2013 for $2 million from the borough's Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The borough collects fees on new construction in the borough, which are deposited in the fund and only can be used for affordable housing projects and related needs.

This project also counts towards meeting the borough's affordable housing requirement under the Mount Laurel doctrine.

"This project will go a long way toward meeting the growing, yet unmet, needs of individuals with disabilities with beautiful independent-living housing," said Mayor Frank Bivona. "They will be a welcome new addition to our community."
